Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty was made in 1959 also set in a French kingdom and was the last fairytale Walt Disney produced. Something that separates this movie from the first two is that it is not a Grimm Brothers fairytale which could give answer to some of the differences.

Also there is quite a divide between the first three movies and the later four. In Sleeping Beauty and the other two the female character was very meek, and always the fair beauty, later on things take a very different approach.

After watching this movie I think it is the harshest princess movie so far. Maleficent has so much spite for Princess Aurora that is simply based on not being invited to her christening which is unlike the other two movies where their hatred is based on jealousy for the Princess' good looks.

Not only does the hate seem unfairly based but also takes up the majority of the movie. Most of this movie is focused around defeating the evil. The main character, "Princess Aurora...appears for fewer than eighteen minutes in the film" - Wikipedia.

Also the darkness of the character Maleficent adds to the overall scare factor. Not only does this character hide in the shadows and appear from a fog, but she also changes into a huge fire-breathing dragon that the prince has to defeat. With so much of the movie focused on this intense amount of the evil force I give this movie six fairies out of ten.

Cinderella

Cinderella was made in 1950 set in a French kingdom. Cinderella fits in with some of the happenings of the late 1940's. Her hair is the most noticeable to this as a medium short wavy cut seemed to be pretty popular.

Also the story line could be said to follow the transition the 1940's went through. Cinderella experiences turmoil for the majority of her life, like world war 2, and in the end gains her own independance. Women were also going through this as men went to war the ladies left behind found their voice.

I would say that the amount of fright that comes from watching this movie is very minimal. This time the "witch" character is her fairy godmother who is a nice person and she does good for Cinderella. The stepmother and sisters, along with their cat, are the evil forces in this movie.

And because cats always try to eat mice and an unlikeable parent and siblings doesn't seem too harsh I would only give this movie two slippers out of ten. Cinderella is an overall 'happy ending' movie :).

Snow White

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs was made in 1937 and was the first full length animated film. While watching the film you could tell that the environment, decor and fashion were from somewhere in Europe, my guess was Dutch? But it turns out to be German.

Snow White is known as the 'fat' princess, and in a way this is true, but when you look at the fashion of the 30's she is romantically accurate. By no means is she fat, but curvy could be argued. Her hair style is also very current to the times. Many pictures I looked up also have short, dark haired bobs.

As for the point of my study I am looking at the evil force in each of these movies and comparing them to the times and the intensity that comes across to the viewers.

Here we have a jealous Queen that practices witchcraft to disguise herself in order to kill the princess, Snow White. Witches have been talked about for centuries and were considered an evil all throughout the world. "Witchcraft came to be seen as a vast diabolical conspiracy against Christianity, and accusations of witchcraft led to large-scale witch-hunts, especially in Germanic Europe." - Wikipedia

This quote I found interesting because in the movie Snow White prays before bed which shows how popular/common Christianity was during that time and that it mentions Germanic Europe which is the location of the story.

As to the intensity of the Queen/Witch, I think it came off as strong but only lasted for a short bit considering she dies after poisoning Snow White. So I would give this movie four red apples out of ten for its scare level. While the Queen/Witch is rather unpleasant the evil and longevity of the character was not that bad.

Princess Study

So yesterday my mom and I were talking about the newest princess movie The Princess and The Frog, which is a super cute movie, but we were talking about the magic in it. The magic in that movie is really dark and a kind of voodoo that I believe is real.

So we got talking and I got to thinking how has the magic in each of these movies changed over the years. So I plan on watching each princess movie and putting down my thoughts on what is in each movie. So I've seen The Princess and The Frog recently and I will start with Snow White and go on from there.

Snow White (1937)
Cinderella (1950)
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
The Little Mermaid (1989)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Aladdin (1992)
The Princess and The Frog (2009)

I don't feel Mulan or Pocahontas truely fit the "princess" mold so I will not include them in my study lol.

1st Year Down

I can't believe the year went by as fast as it did! Kathleen has been great all year and has taken me to the airport everytime. This time I got kicked out of the dorms way early so I got to spend some time at Kathleen's house. We rode her ponies and I absolutely love Gino!

Before heading to the airport we got some lunch at a yummy taco place. Then I was homeward bound. Out the plane window I took a few pictures of the beautiful lit up sky of Spokane.

Moovin On Out

Oh my goodness I can't believe that this is the last weekend of my freshmen year! This weekend Jill and I planned on moving all of our stuff into the storage unit. Stephen was able to drive up to help and Mr. Human was also around and helped us move out.

We also vistited the M&M factory again because we all know how much Stephen likes candy lol :)

Saying goodbye to my 2nd home for the summer.

Hurah

At the end of every semester Don hosts all of the campus ministry at his house. Compared to last semester we had a huge group! We have been so blessed with the growth and we are all motivated for next year.

We played some bachi ball, had fun singing some songs and eating good food. We had an amazing time sharing with each other and committing ourselves to be a light within the world.

CTI 14:21

It was so much fun to be able to host an event for the CTI group that Aaron has been apart of for the last year! The band showed up on Saturday evening and led worship for all of the Trinity UMC teens on Sunday morning.

The church had been doing a 30-hour famine and for them to be able to jump right in was incredible. On Sunday morning after most of the kids had such a powerful weekend feeling first hand how others feel because they can't eat that day, CTI jumped and drove everything home for them.

It was so great to see Aaron and it was a little crazy that even out in New Jersey I can meet up with friends. The band was so put together and played so well that we all wished they could have stayed longer and become the permanent worship band for Campus Ministry. Seeing them play really made me miss worship team and how much of a blessing that was for me to have every day.

After missing worship team so much and Rich really wanting me to audition I really started to re-look at going on a summer mission trip. I would absolutely love to but I don't think the time is right yet. I'll keep praying about it and hopefully I will get to do it.

Take Action

"There is enough for everybody's need, but not for everybody's greed." - Gahndi

How true is that. Why can't we, those who have enough step up to the plate and give a helping hand to those who have nothing?

This is my challenge to you: take action and do what you can because you can.

30 Hour Famine

I participated in my first 30 hour famine over the past couple days! It was not easy to not eat for a little more than 30 hours but I did successfully manage it. Friday I realized I tend to eat out of boredom and since I couldn't do that I was very productive! I got a ton of laundry done, including all my horse stuff and I tidied up my room.

Once at the Church it was fun to do all the different games, even running around freezing cold in the rain for a half an hour looking for flags. We watched a really touching video about a guy and his group of friends who went to Ethiopia and they told the story about a little boy who's mother was dying from AIDS. Totally brought me to tears. Then right after it was my turn to spend a half an hour in the prayer room. Candles were lit all over a table with a list of the devastating things going on in our world. I brought in my IPod and prayed and worshiped. It went by all too fast.

During that time I again got the strong pulling that I need to go to Africa as soon as I can. Maybe I can start saving up over the summer and go on a trip over Christmas break with Mocha Club. Last year they offered trips at that time and it would be the best timing. Please pray for me that I will do God's will whatever it might be and go wherever it might take me.

Easter

Happy Easter! I went home with Candace again and we chilled at her mom's Friday night. Then on Saturday we spent a good chunk of time watching The Big Bang Theory. Which is my new favorite show by the way! Total real nerd humor :) I love it. Then that night we dyed eggs.

Then Sunday morning I partook in the family traditions of standing on the stairs as the easter bunny came and left us little gifts around the house. He even left me my own basket full of goodies and candy.

Then we went to their Grandma's house for dinner. Something they always do is catch fish with bread and nets. Candace and Jess both caught fish, I got really close but to no avail :(.

After dinner I headed back to school and made a stop at Rider to see Stephen for a few hours. I got a tour of the campus and it is HUGE comparred to Centenary! Then we hung out at the SigEp Fraternity houseand I met a few of Stephen's brothers. Then I continued on my way back to school.

Get Started!

Start supporting Mocha Club today by joining my group, Centenary Clean Water. Or you can start your own group that benefits another area that Mocha Club funds.

Matthew 25:40 "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

What really would you be missing out on by giving something up so another might have what they need?

Just a List

I was thinking today during worship about a few things that I would like to do in the near future that don't have anything to do with riding. Its a shorter list lol but I still think that I would really like to do them.

1) The first is to watch The Passion of the Christ. I've never seen this movie before because I wasn't sure if I was ready to watch simply the true suffering of Christ and also because I didn't know if I was spiritually in the right place before. I think this year I am ready to handle it and I would love to find time this Easter to watch it.

2) I'm dieing to go to Africa! I would love to go with the Mocha Club on one of their summer or winter trips. I'm still not positive when or how I would be able to do this but it definitely is on my heart.

3) Just tonight while watching a clip about Jesus riding in on a donkey and people laying down the palms made me think that a trip through the middle east all through where Jesus lived would be the coolest thing ever! Maybe 7-10 years from now that would be something I would be able to do.

4) This one I still am not sure how I feel about it but its been on my mind a lot. I've been thinking about a tattoo idea using the verse 1 John 4:19 "We love because He first loved us." This verse has really grown on me and I believe it to be the very basic concept of Christianity. So I've considered putting that into a tattoo. Originally I thought about putting the whole verse somewhere but a new idea has come about. Now I'm liking just the word love, all in lower case cursive, with the reference underneath it. It's still something I'm not fully 100% about so I'll let you know. Who knows it could be a fun thing to do on my 21st birthday instead of wasting my brains out :).

Schooled

Today was the schooling show and I was supposed to ride Cali in the novice eq. We were warming up great in the upper indoor and came down to the lower indoor to warm up over the show jumps. We were close to being finished and were jumping the last jump in the 5 stride line and after we got over it Cali gave a buck with a twist and I came off hard. I landed on both of my knees and ate some dirt.

I got back up and went to clean myself off, I was really dirty! I ripped my only pair of show breeches :( I got back on up top and tried to re-warm up a little. I couldn't even move my legs. So I had to get off and I didn't get to show. I was able to fully put her away on my own but as time went on it got harder and harder to walk. I went to the doctors and then went and got x-rays of my knees.

Hopefully nothing is too wrong and hopefully I can ride again soon. But as for now walking would be a great improvement.

Spring Break

It's been really nice to be home! I got to check on my pony and boy does he need his mommy! He hadn't gotten his feet trimmed since Christmas break.

I also tagged along to tennis practices and shocked myself by not totally stinking it up. I really do enjoy playing tennis. I wish I knew where courts were back at school.

Then on Saturday I went to Audrey's first tennis match. She got to play 3rd singles and she won! Jess and Hanna played first doubles and won as well. Hopefully everyone has a really great season! Good luck girls.

Down South

What a start to spring break! I skipped out on my night class and left early from Fundamentals on Thursday. I flew out from Newark to Atlanta then on to Columbia, SC. I met up with Robin and we headed to the show grounds to check on the horses.

On Friday we went to the show in Aiken and I walked around and watched. Then later I got to hack Grannus a really nice big eq. horse. Then Saturday I got to ride both Ramino and Monte. We went out to dinner with another trainer and some of his clients. Then on Sunday Grannus showed and then we packed everyone up and headed to Savannah. When we got to her house I rode Arco out in her field.

I was supposed to catch my flight to Philly around noon on Monday but thunderstorms had a ground stop so I wasn't able to fly out. Thankfully Robin hadn't left yet and I was able to stay with her one more night. Before we had left I got to ride another horse and then once we got back I got to ride a really cute black one. Bright and early Tuesday morning I was able to catch my flight out.

One Last Time

This was the last IHSA show of the season outside of Regionals and Zones. I got to do both flat and jumps today. My jumps course was really good till the last jump and Moon and I had a rail. I couldn't tell if there was one more stride or not so I was a little behind. Then for my flat class I rode Jazzy a hot and sensitive mare. I did the best I could to stay relaxed and make everything as smooth as possible.

While we were watching the other levels of horses warm up a grey caught my eye. He was the cutest thing! Over jumped everything and was quiet the little mover on the flat. I wanted to take him home with me in my back pocket!

Back Again

This semester we only have two horse shows and then we get into Regionals, Zones, and then Nationals. So I've signed up for both and I'm excited to horse show yet again!

I was originally was supposed to do both jumps and flat but they scratched me from flat so another girl could ride. Bummer :/. But I still got to jump, and when I found out my draw I got really excited. I drew Red who I rode last semester on the flat. It is really nice to draw a horse you have already ridden because you already know how they work and it gives you a slight advantage.

My round was really good and I was really excited to place first. Now I have 14 Jumping points and 17 Flat points.

Snow Days

Snow Day! So much snow and it just kept coming. We ended up with about 2 feet. At dinner Michelle really wanted to go outside and play in it so we all got bundled up and made a night of it.

It was a ton of fun! We made snow angels and tried a snow man but it didn't work. We trampled through all the untouched snow. We took pride as we looked around and knew that all of that mess was us :).

Candace was stuck in her snow angel.

We are so excited!

Candace, Jill, Kate, Michelle, Sam and I

We had a blast.

The End.
